I just received a couple of reams of paper from Dell using points about to expire. Before that I bought the printer with about to expire points.

Depends on how much I have, though I usually save with a specific purchase in mind. If points are expiring, I convert them to Dell Dollars to extend the expiration date another 4 months and keep on saving.

short term I'll find the item that's closest in value to the points, and redeem for it and then cancel the order to get dell dollars for another 3 months

All kinds of stuff. Although, recently, I tried to get ghosts of tsushima, and they cleared it from inventory as they put it on sale. So my order cancelled, and points that would of had a few months on them now have less as dell dollars.
